In January 2018, the UK Government set out its vision for how nature throughout the country should be protected and helped to thrive in the decades to come. As part of a 25 Year Environment Plan (25YEP), commitments were announced to prevent the depletion of natural resources, mitigate the effects of climate change, and boost biodiversity across the nation.

Architecture and interior design are coming to be seen as increasingly important arenas in which to bring our daily lives and the natural world closer together. To that end, many designers looking to rejuvenate public spaces using sustainable, natural features are turning to urban greening elements such as sedum roofing and living walls to help achieve their vision.

The modern workplace is in a state of flux. In a post-pandemic world of flexible working arrangements, increased virtual connectivity, and debates over the role the office should play in our working lives, many employers are embracing the opportunity to redesign workspaces in ways that prioritise the happiness and wellbeing of their employees. Biophilic design is playing an increasingly large part in these conversations, encouraging all manner of businesses to carefully consider our human connection with nature when designing the places people spend time in.
